Slow finish for KZN champ

2008-06-03 00:00

Prodigal Khumalo out ran over 700 runners to win Sunday’s Forest 10 by over 50 metres, but it was his Mr Price club-mate, Sandile Lembethe, who earned the title of KwaZulu-Natal champion.

Khumalo looked the champion over the second five and took the tape in 30 minutes and 51 seconds with Richard Nene a consistent second, while Zimbabwean Tawanda Tokisi got the better of some late positional changes to fill the last podium step.

Disappointingly, it took over a minute, and half-a-dozen places, before Lembethe crossed the line as the first South African and, therefore, the 2008 KZN 10 km champion. Westville’s Dave Long surprised many, including Sipho Ngxongo, whom he pipped to the post to record a 32 minute and 20 second finish as runner-up.

Despite an explosive first kilometre from

Cary-Ann Cave, it was Olympic marathon hopeful Tanith Maxwell who dominated the women’s race, covering the course in 36 minutes and 11 seconds.

Down the south coast, Godfrey Koki was an outright winner of the Lindane Mbhele Memorial challenge in a time of 32 minutes and 40 seconds.

Londela Khakhuse led the women home.
