Small fire at match company

2013-10-03 00:00

THE Lion Match Company’s head office in Umgeni Road in Durban was struck a light blow yesterday, after a small fire broke out in the building’s top level floor.

And sometimes, where there’s smoke there is no big fire, as relieved staff learned when they arrived for work in the morning.

They were still milling about the building around 8 am, after being either evacuated or, others, before going into the office, as the fire struck in the early hours of the morning.

After being alerted, a Durban police search-and-rescue team and firemen evacuated staff who were in the building.

Trevor Stevens, eThekwini fire and emergency division commander, said the fire was contained and extinguished after firemen responded to the scene.

“It was a small fire, which just burnt paper, leaving the office destroyed. Fortunately no one was injured,” he said.

Officials said the fire allegedly started after an electrical fuse sparked flames at around 6 am.

“If it had started earlier, the entire building could have been gutted,” one of the rescue personnel said.
