Smero wins in Penalty shoot-out to book place in final

2012-05-29 00:00

SATURDAY saw the regional qualifying tournament for the Sanlam/Motsepe High Schools Cup take place. The tournament featured the top eight high schools from all over the region and the knockout format on the day meant that there was no room for error, especially considering the quality of the teams.

The final between Smero High School (Edendale) and Georgenau High School (Wartburg) went down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out, with Smero holding their nerve to win and thus advancing to the KZN finals, to be held in Richard’s Bay on June 29.

The Sanlam/Motsepe Cup is a national tournament involving over 200 schools from all over the country who play off in district, regional and provincial qualifiers to advance to the national finals, the winners of which receive a whopping R1 million. That being said, credit must go to the teams for the spirit in which the games were played and to the organisers for ensuring that the event was run smoothly.
