Smit snares four Cobras with his leggies

2007-12-15 00:00

AT the close of day two of the SuperSport Series cricket match between the Western Cape Cobras and KZN Dolphins at Newlands in Cape Town yesterday, the visitors trailed by 104 runs with all their second innings wickets intact.

Following their 210 all out on the first day, the Dolphins did well to restrict the Cobras to 317 yesterday.

It was a fightback of sorts after the Dolphins chose to bat first on Thursday morning, a decision not vindicated by another mediocre total to go with their five previous innings.

The Dolphins had excellent catching and largely the combination of Liam Plunkett’s three for 66 and wicketkeeper/leg-spinner (he is surely the first cricketer to be described thus) Daryn Smit’s career-best four for 68 to thank for keeping them in the game.

Smit threw the wicketkeeping gloves to Wayne Madsen four times during his 20-odd overs of deceptive leg-spinners, one of which googled Monde Zondeki. In between, Smit took a catch down the leg side off Plunkett while Hashim Amla picked up four pearlers at first slip.

Cobras captain Justin Kemp will be disappointed that the solid platform they laid didn’t kick on to a huge total that would have taken the game away from the Dolphins completely. At 228 for four, the Cobras could have reasonably expected more than just another 89 runs, but as well as Andrew Puttick (55), Henry Davids (74), Ashwell Prince (51) and Kemp (47) batted, none were able to go on to a three-figure score that could have taken the home side to 400-plus.

One suspects that the Dolphins are going to need at least two centurions in their second innings if they hope to stay in the game.

The Cobras earned 7.82 bonus points (3.82 batting, 4 bowling) to the 5.20 of the Dolphins (2.20 batting, 3 bowling).
