Soccer fans rush for last tickets

2014-05-03 00:00

THE capital had a buzz in the air yesterday as soccer fans rushed to buy the remaining tickets for tonight’s Nedbank Cup semi-final between local boys Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates at Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium.

United spokesperson Brian Zuma said the tickets were “selling like hot cakes”.

“Thus far, we have sold out tickets on the open stands and we only have a few remaining tickets on the grand stand, which are being sold at our club’s offices,” he said.

“There is a lot of excitement for this game and people need to rush to our offices to avoid being disappointed when they find that even those tickets have been sold out,” said Zuma.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela said Maritzburg United had won several difficult away games in the recent past and “I strongly foresee them winning against Orlando Pirates”.

“On behalf of the citizens of Pietermaritzburg, some of whom have a divided loyalty, I wish Maritzburg United a win tomorrow [today],” said Ndlela. He congratulated the club’s chairperson Farouk Kadodia and his board for going this far.

Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business CEO Melanie Veness was also backing the local team.

“We are very proud that Maritzburg United has reached this stage — what a team,” she said.
