Socialite held for kidnap

2014-03-01 00:00

A DURBAN fashion chain store owner and city socialite was arrested for allegedly kidnapping three men in Musgrave after a car deal went sour.

Rosanne Narandas (55), who is a co-owner of Ooh La La Boutique with stores across the country and whose family owns Narandas Fine Jewellery — one of the city’s top jewellery outlets with stores in the Pavilion Shopping Centre, Westville and the Gateway Mall, Umhlanga — was arrested by the Berea SAPS yesterday morning and released on bail.

Police yesterday said that Narandas allegedly locked the men in a garage for at least three hours on Thursday afternoon and refused to let them out. Both the Berea Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit were called to the scene and tried to negotiate with Narandas. Eventually the men were released at 8.30 pm.

Narandas was arrested yesterday morning in the presence of her lawyer and then charged at the Berea police station before appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. The matter was adjourned until March 27.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said, “It is alleged that the suspect locked them in the premises after a dispute over the purchase price of a motor vehicle. Police were called out and the gates were opened by cutting the lock with a bolt cutter.”

Attempts to contact Narandas were unsuccessful.
