Solid win for College against visiting Affies

2014-07-29 00:00

THE Maritzburg College first hockey team beat Affies 8-2 in their first match of the third term on Saturday.

College scored first, with Tevin Kok netting in the fifth minute. Three minutes later, Amkelwa Letuka made it 2-0 with a tap in on the right post after receiving from Kok.

Affies then pulled a goal back after being awarded a penalty corner and scoring a solid drag flick off the top of the castle. The match remained tight until the 17th minute, when Callum Brown made an attacking pass down the left flank, allowing Kok to receive the ball in space and eliminate an Affies defender, setting up David Small with a flick past the goalkeeper’s left shoulder into the top of the net.

In the 22nd minute, College were awarded their third penalty corner with Peabo Lembethe scoring off the rebound. Kok scored again in the last minute before half-time to make the score 5-1, with a great pass from Gareth Herselman to Kok for the deflection.

Three minutes into the second half, a strong run down the right-hand channel from College captain Tim Halle saw Bryce Tullis complete the goal.

Landon Campbell got himself on the score-sheet in the 16th minute of the second half when the College outfit moved the ball from left to right, with Onke Letuka entering the circle on the right-hand side and Campbell on the near post to complete the move.

Affies pulled one back with a penalty corner before Small rounded up the result at 8-2 with a well-worked long corner from the team, with Small waiting on the far post for a simple tap in.

Meanwhile, Westville’s Jacques Bleeker captained the SA U18 team in a three-match Test series against Australia this month and is the school’s first national hockey captain at any level. He will be attending the Youth Olympic Games in August in China with the SA U18 team.

Other Westville boys to play for SA are Gareth Simmonds and Brandon Watkins (SA U18B), and Matthew Davies and Mbuso Mgobozi (SA U16).
