Son sets house on fire

2011-09-16 00:00

A PALMVIEW family was left devastated after their 22-year-old son set part of their house alight on Tuesday.

Sarah Moonsamy was at her place of work when her son, Luke Khrisna, broke through a back door with a pick and then started the fire.

Then he fled the scene.

A neighbour saw smoke escape through a window of the house and alerted the Hibiscus Coast fire department.

Firemen arrived within minutes and extinguished the fire, saving whatever they could.

A tearful Moonsamy told police at the scene that her son had frequently threatened them, including the night before the fire.

“He told us that he will burn the house down with us inside,” she said.

The fire destroyed the lounge, dining room and part of the kitchen.

The lounge ceiling collapsed and part of the passage was badly burnt.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Khrisna was arrested after he returned to the house later on Tuesday night.

“The family have indicated that he [Khrisna] has caused trouble before,” Wiid said.

Khrisna appeared in court yesterday and remains in police custody.

The case has been postponed to Thursday in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court.

He faces charges of housebreaking and arson.
