Sony gives Apple a run for its money

2015-03-07 00:00

SONY brought their Mobile World Congress announcements to South Africa at an event in Johannesburg this week.

The company announced the availability of four of their new devices, the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, the M4 Aqua, the E4g and the E4, soon in the country.

The Z4 Tablet is currently one of the only water and dustproof tablets in the market and gives the Apple iPad Air a run for its money — literally — crushing its rival in almost every technical specification, including size dimensions, weight, camera and processor.

It features a 2K display and a Bluetooth keyboard accessory with its own mouse pad to navigate the device.

Also on the cards is the M4 Aqua, which sees major upgrades from its predecessor, the M2 Aqua. Sony included premium features into this mid-range smartphone resulting in a lower price point.

Andrew Fraser, channel marketing manager for Sony Mobile South Africa, said the manufacturer was already tapped in to the needs of the mid-range market and offers high-end features in a good portfolio of products.

“The M2 Aqua is great at the moment, there’s definitely a market. Consumers can see the value of what it offers. The value of waterproof is real to the consumer so what we have done is taken that value offering and made it better,” he said.

In addition to its namesake, the M4 Aqua features wide-angle lens facing camera for selfies. It also boasts a better display and a two-day battery life on a single charge.

“These are paying points for consumers. We think there is a massive potential for us in that market. We’ve got big competitors in that space but I don’t see any from them that even closely resembles what this product can offer,” Fraser said.

The E4g and E4 devices further the company’s effort to produce a cheaper smartphone — for users who a not too fussy about what they need from a smartphone. Both devices’ specs match, with E4 featuring a larger screen but the processor of the E4g being slightly faster.
