South African teams triumph at polocrosse

2013-07-17 00:00

SOUTH Africa hosted an international polocrosse quadrangular tournament this past weekend at the Timm family’s Brinstone Farm near Mooi River. The format comprised an A and a B pool, with four countries contesting each division.

The B pool was contested by Ireland, Zimbabwe B, the South African Superspar and the South African Shackleton teams, while the A pool was contested by Zambia, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and the South African Proteas team. After the group stages, it was the two South African teams in the B pool and the Proteas and Zimbabwe in the A pool making it through to the finals, which were played on Sunday.

In Pool B, the final was contested between the SA Shackleton and SA Superspar sides, and was a closely contested match with the score level going into the seventh of eight chukkas. With men and women alternating after each chukka, a spirited display in the final quarter of the match saw the Shackleton team running out 31-20 winners.

In the final of the A pool, the SA Proteas team were hot favourites to triumph over Zimbabwe after they had won 23-12 in the group stages.

But the final was a closer contest with the Proteas running out 31-22. Although the women won the first and seventh chukkas, they were severely challenged by the very experienced Zimbabwe women, who won the third and fifth chukkas. The Protea men were superb in attack with Graham Maclarty unstoppable.

POOL A: 1st – SA Proteas

2nd – Zimbabwe

3rd – United Kingdom

4th – Zambia

POOL B: 1st – SA Shackleton

2nd – SA Superspar

3rd – Ireland

4th – Zimbabwe B
