South Coast belle to anchor BBC’s audience in Johannesburg

2012-07-23 00:00

THE BBC broadcasts to nearly 80 million people in Africa, a prospect which would daunt even veteran broadcasters, but South African-born journalist Lerato Mbele is taking the fact in her stride.

Originally from the South Coast, Mbele has just been appointed one of the hosts of Newsday, the BBC World Service’s new flagship radio programme. The show is part of a range of new programming launched by the BBC for Africa this year.

Having worked first at the SABC and then at CNBC Africa, Mbele brings a wealth of experience to her new role as the Jo’burg based co-presenter of Newsday alongside Lawrence Pollard in London as well as Bola Mosuro, Julian Keane and Nuala McGovern in Africa.

Raised in what she calls a “liberal but African home”, Mbele said she was never discouraged from pursuing her dreams of being a journalist, but was always told to remember who she was and where she came from culturally as a Zulu, South African and African.
