South Coaster of the Day

2011-02-16 00:00

VICKY Erasmus, owner of Wozani Africa Events, has been working on the South Coast for years.

She is passionate about the area and has always believed in its potential to be a booming success. The Witness caught up with her.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

ERASMUS: Creating new events that leave a legacy for the host town and bring in massive foot traffic. I loved bringing The Loerie Awards and Africa Bike Week to the town of Margate!

Is the South Coast alive with possibility or only happening in the holiday season?

ERASMUS: ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES! Especially the town of Margate — many local people call her “an old lady” — I see her as the “Grande Dame of Southern France”. She transforms when dressed up and when the weather’s on your side you end up with one incredible events venue.

What would you change about our country, if you could?

ERASMUS: I love most things about our country — that is why we decided to stay when everybody else hot-footed it out of here.

I think that HIV is a major problem and that the government has not done enough to address the socially related issues and aspects of the disease.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

ERASMUS: Juggling a gorgeous husband, my own company and raising our two beautiful children with moderate success!

Who would you like to meet more than anyone and why?

ERASMUS: I don’t iconise — when we get to meet national and international celebrities I tend to hang back. However having said this I was once offered to assist on a Jamie Oliver tour and that really did excite me — I love his style and admire the fact that he turned his trade into a multi million pound empire. He has always remained true to himself and never let the fame and finance get to his head!

What is your secret dish in the kitchen?

ERASMUS: We love to eat Italian dishes with a South African twist. Anything that is fresh and in season (preferably organic) can be turned into stunning meze platters. Tapas and salmon-based dishes are our current favourites.

What does the future hold for you?

ERASMUS: I have opened outlets in the Cape as well as in Durban and we are looking at positioning more of our clients within these area’s.

When you’re away from work, how do you spend your time?

ERASMUS: With my family and friends, travelling to exotic destinations (really), gardening, cooking by candlelight with my husband and a bottle of excellent Backsberg Family Reserve!

Are you a good dancer?

ERASMUS: I think that I am amazing! (Especially after a gin and tonic) I used to do belly dancing in the UK when I first left school and every now and then I seem to think that I am back in that space...

What is the most beautiful and scenic view on the South Coast?

ERASMUS: I love Ramsgate beach early in the morning — we walk our dog Timmy and I have seen the most incredible sunrises over the rocks.

Which song best describes you?

ERASMUS: Fight it with your mind by the Asylum Kids!!!
