South Coaster of the day

2011-02-15 00:00

JEANDRE “JD” Labotski has been living in Uvongo for five years and is the lead singer of local band Forthlock. The band have played at many venues on the South Coast and are still going strong over a year later. The Witness caught up with the local rocker.

When did you first get drawn to music?

LABOTSKI: I’ve been in it my whole life. growing up I was always into bands and my step-father used to play in a band so I guess that’s where it started.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Labotski: Hopefully we can be the next Parlotones or Prime Circle.

What do you enjoy most about the South Coast?

LABOTSKI: It’s a super chilled and laid back lifestyle.

What do you do in your spare time?

LABOTSKI: Most of the time we just practise. Otherwise, I’ll be sitting in the pub or surfing or something.

How do all the band members get on?

LABOTSKI: We’re like a big family; blood couldn’t make us any closer. We have never had a fall-out.

What would you change about South Africa if you could?

LABOTSKI: The music industry. We lose so much talent with aspiring artists going overseas where they are recognised.

Who is your favourite South African band?

LABOTSKI: A band called Black Era which most people don’t know. Commercially, I would have to say Vokofpolisiekar.

Where in the world would you most like to go?

LABOTSKI: America.

Who was your role model growing up?

LABOTSKI: My best friend Donovan; he’s been like a brother to me.

Rugby or football?

LABOTSKI: Football — definitely.

What is your proudest moment?

LABOTSKI: The birth of my child. She turns three in April.

Any special plans for Valentine’s Day?

LABOTSKI: I was actually in the dog-box earlier because I didn’t do anything special — but I will take her out for dinner later.
