Southport robber caught

2011-09-12 00:00

EARLY on Friday morning a 25-year-old woman and an elderly man became victims of the same armed robber in two separate incidents.

At around 4.30 am a Southport woman was getting ready for work in her room in Fairview Mission.

While she was ironing her clothes a man dressed in black gained entry into her room and pointed a firearm at her.

The robber had a knife in the other hand.

He threatened her with the weapons and demanded cash.

The woman said the suspect threatened to rape her unless she gave into his demands.

The robber ransacked the room and fled with a DVD player and her cellphone.

The woman called her neighbours for assistance and they alerted the police.

Police tracked the suspect and found him still clad in black.

Police arrested the suspect, who took the officers to two locations where he had hidden the stolen property underneath bushes.

As police were examining the scene, an elderly man approached them and reported that he had been robbed by the same suspect.

The elderly man was walking along a footpath when he was accosted by the suspect after fleeing from the woman’s room. He was robbed of money.

The suspect faces charges of house robbery and robbery.
