Soweto TV to launch in July

2009-09-05 00:00

The community of Soweto will have its own free television channel from July 1. Soweto TV will be launched at the beginning of next month and will allow the residents of Soweto to have their own voice on a community television network.

The community channel received its broadcasting licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and will be broadcasting all news, sport and entertainment to do with Soweto 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Soweto TV will broadcast across the entire area where Sowetans reside, including the Ekurhuleni region and the West Rand.

The free-to-air community television channel first went on air for a month in 2005 and again in 2006 for eight hours a day, and was a resounding success with the community. Soweto accounts for 40% of the population in Greater Johannesburg and comprises a largely low-income market.

“Soweto TV will fulfil the objective of educating, entertaining and empowering the community. It will be the voice for the voiceless,” says Tshepo Thafeng, CEO of Soweto Community Television.

“We'll be showcasing new talent from time to time, as in the previous broadcasts. We want to give the Soweto youth the opportunity to showcase their talent to the community and at the same time prepare them for the bigger stage.”

Soweto Community Television has joined forces with an Urban Brew Studios outreach initiative and, together with the community, will develop content that is quite literally “by the people, of the people, for the people”. Urban Brew Studios will assist in establishing a broadcast centre in Soweto, which will help with the programme scheduling and broadcasting, and train up a bigger team. Workshops will be scheduled and conducted with specific groupings within the community - women and children for example - to better understand and communicate its needs.
