Spar race for women a record festival of personal bests

2009-07-28 00:00

SUNDAY’S Spar 10 km Ladies’ race threw up an unexpected number of fast times and personal bests, including a magnificent, blood and guts run by 60- year-old Sonja Laxton.

The number of top end performances is prompting questions from statisticians similar to those querying the recent SA 21 km Championships. International statisticians have queried the Port Elizabeth results due to the vast performance improvements throughout the competitive field. As with PE, the performance improvement of at least 14 leading athletes exceeds the normal five percent allowance recognised by race statisticians.

While the 2009 Half Marathon champion Annerien van Schalkwyk made the early running from the gun, Rene Kalmer took a more conservative approach to close the gap by the three kilometre mark.

Kalmer made her break from Van Schalkwyk, who looked a bit heavy legged, on the slight incline on the beachfront and continued to increase the gap to cross the line in 32 minutes 27 seconds. This is 34 seconds faster than the fastest time recorded in 2008, and one second faster than her personal best set at the SA Nedbank 10 km Championships

The trend continued with Michelle Bartman the leading 40 plus Western Province athlete crossing the line in 36 minutes 31 seconds for 14th position, which if ratified, will be a new provincial record and fifth fastest on the all time list for 40 plus runners.

The outstanding performance of the day was that of Sonja Laxton who covered the new 2009 single lap route in 41 minutes and seven seconds. Amazingly Laxton’s heel was clipped at the mass start sending her flying to the ground. “She literally seemed to bounce back up” said Lise Muchna from Pinetown who was close by. Laxton’s time is 19 seconds faster than the SA 60 plus record time she set in the Cape Town version of the Spar Series.

Over 2 700 runners and walkers took part in the 25th hosting of the Richard Bay Coal Terminal Charity relay on Sunday. The race for teams of six runners and three walkers was won by BHP Billington’s “Killer” team in two hours 29 minutes and 27 seconds for the 49,2 km course.
