Spate of accidents in the province as holiday traffic hots up

2014-12-22 00:00

THOUSANDS of holiday motorists have begun their cross-country trek, but not all reached their destination.

Multiple road accidents have already claimed lives over the weekend.

At times from Friday, the Mariannhill Toll Plaza was choked with inland holiday-makers heading to the coast, but the traffic had mostly eased off yesterday.

A staffer at the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), who asked not to be named, reported almost 2 000 cars passing through the toll gate between 3 pm and 4 pm on Friday alone.

With the increased traffic, KZN EMS paramedics raced around on Friday night as collisions around the province claimed eight lives.

According to KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie, four people died in just one accident involving a minibus and a car in the Umkhanyakude district on the N2 near Shikishela on Friday.

Eight other people were injured in the same accident.

Four more people died in separate accidents in the province, also on Friday.

In another incident yesterday morning, six people were injured in an accident on the N2 southbound between Ballito and Tongaat.
