‘Spirit of Comrades’ honours selflessness, dedication, and perseverance

ANYONE who has completed the Comrades Marathon will know that it is no easy race — but to strap on an extra 12 kg rhino costume and endure it, is no joke.

Comrades Marathon Association held its Spirit of Comrades annual gala awards on Friday last week, where Vincent O’Neill, who endured the gruelling 89 km race in a rhino suit, was recognised.

Courtesy of Cathsseta (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sports Sector Education & Training Authority) the awards night honoured individuals for their selflessness, dedication, and perseverance.

O’Neill was inspired to run the race in this fashion to highlight the fight against rhino poaching. His passion for saving the beleaguered rhino drove him to finish the epic race in the costume despite the 2013 Comrades Marathon’s being one of the hottest and most difficult races in nearly 40 years.

Other recipients were Brad Brown, who worked tirelessly over the past four years to raise money for the Ama-beadibeadi charity campaign. Not only did he overcome major physical obstacles to complete the Comrades Marathon several times, but Brown gave of his time and effort to set up the Race 4 Charity website and inspired the special “CC - Charity seeding batch” to motivate runners to raise funds for charity.

The third recipient was Australian runner Joseph Ta who aided a fellow runner who had collapsed in the race, waited with the runner, and still completed his race.
