Spirits are high as DUT launches its radio station today

2014-07-25 00:00

AFTER numerous attempts, the Durban University of Technology will finally launch its official radio station, online today.

The RadioDUT crew comprises students at the university, who set aside time to pilot the station.

“This station is filled with fun, bubbly people and every day is a breeze,” said Sibusiso Nxumalo, station manager and co-founder.

Nxumalo, who graduated with a BTech in Public Relations last year, said it was his dream to get RadioDUT running.

“I put together a plan with Amar Singh, the Dean of Students. DUT funded the project and now the radio station is growing every day,” he said.

The radio station has seen a worldwide soft launch and trial runs since June 2.

Chemistry student Luyanda Khambule, who works as a radio DJ and is the head of news, said she had confidence in the team who put the station together.

“Everyone is eager to learn, we have students from all walks of life. As young as we are, we are all willing to share what knowledge we have,” she said.

Nokwazi Qumbisa, an intern journalist at the station and news reader, said: “People call in or communicate with us on Facebook, so there is much more interaction.

“Even during holidays, students use their own data to listen to us via live streaming.”

RadioDUT’s programme line-up includes a breakfast show, talk shows and news.

• The official launch of the radio station takes place from 12 pm to 2 pm today, at the Steve Biko campus.

The station will be broadcast to all seven campuses, including the Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg.
