Sporting record for Pelham

2011-05-17 00:00

THE bigger high schools are often involved in a large number of sporting fixtures over a week, but it is not as common in the primary schools.

Pelham Senior Primary School, though, can boast a record sporting achievement this past week, thanks to the efforts of Steve Stakemire, the school’s sports co-ordinator.

All Pelham pupils are encouraged to participate in at least one sporting code per term. This week Pelham challenged seven different schools from as far afield as Durban. A total of 61 matches were played in four sporting codes — rugby, football, netball and hockey.

In total, 720 children were involved and transport had to be arranged for about 340 pupils.

Principle Louis Botha is very proud of this record and he said that there are many weeks when the number of children involved in various sporting activities is close to 700, but this past week was a record.
