Sports field transformed into World Cup theme park at Kharina Secondary

2010-03-20 00:00

SCHOOL bells and the scratch of chalk on blackboards gave way to vuvuzelas and upbeat music at Kharina Secondary School yesterday, where the World Cup theme was incorporated into the school’s annual interclass athletics championship.

Students wore the colours of the 30 participating countries, brandished flags and sang traditional songs as they gathered on the sports field.

The grade 10 class drew Brazil. Class teacher Zahida Yacoob said the exercise was a valuable teaching tool. “We got the learners to research the country. They learned facts about the capital and even the symbolism behind the flag,” she said.

Classmates Angelique Ramlall and Katherina Bimalkumar agreed to support Brazil at the World Cup because “they are so hot! And they play good football …”

Principal Yebentheran Moodley said sport and cultural activities are important for teenagers.

“Sport is an answer to many social ills which have trapped our children,” he added.
