‘Spud’ spurs big splurge

2010-03-20 00:00

MORE than a million rand is being pumped into the midlands economy thanks to the filming of Spud: The Movie.

Rogue Star Films began shooting the film version of John van de Ruit’s popular novel Spud on Monday at Michaelhouse in Balgowan, and the film’s public relations officer, Trevor Crichton, confirmed that R1 million is being spent on accommodating the 91 cast and crew in 10 bed-and- breakfasts in the area. The rooms have been booked for seven weeks — two weeks of pre-production and five weeks of filming.

The crew is also getting around R300 000 in spending money, which, he says, is “likely to be spent visiting restaurants, pubs and attractions” in Pietermaritzburg and along the Midlands Meander.

A further R600 000 is being spent on catering supplies for the film shoot, most of which are being sourced locally or from Durban, and the film’s art department is printing 1990-era labels, logos and other items in Pietermaritzburg.

Durban has also benefited from Spud: The Movie being filmed in KwaZulu-Natal. Around R1 million worth of equipment has been hired from the city, and Tempest and Imperial in Durban have supplied a fleet of five trucks and 20 to 30 cars at a cost of around R800 000.

The film is also employing a thousand extras from the local area. Almost half the crew come from KZN, and labour to assist during filming has been sourced locally.
