‘Spud’ star announces he is gay to his fans and followers on YouTube

2013-08-13 00:00

TROYE Sivan, the actor who is best known for playing the role of John “Spud” Milton in the two film adaptations of the comedic novel series Spud, has revealed that he is gay.

Sivan, who has almost half a million subscribers on his YouTube channel, decided to announce the news to his fans and followers on the social media video site after he shared the news with his family and friends.

The 18-year-old South African-born actor currently lives with his parents in Perth, Australia.

In his latest video, which was watched more than 765 000 times yesterday, he said it was exactly three years since he told his father he is gay.

“It feels kind of weird to have to announce something like this on the Internet, but I feel like a lot of you guys are real, genuine friends of mine. And I share everything on the Internet. I share every aspect of my life on the Internet. Whether or not that’s a good thing, I don’t know.

“But this is not something that I’m ashamed of. It’s not something that anyone should be ashamed of,” Sivan explained.

He said he was still the same person and had always been gay. He said other YouTube videos in which people had announced they are gay had inspired him to come out to his family in 2010.

Sivan said he told his father during a discussion about religion that he was gay. The 18-year-old actor said that he had been in denial for a long time. Even though he knew at the back of his mind that he was gay, it was something that he didn’t want to acknowledge.

During a talk with his father, Sivan was able to admit his sexuality to him, although he said he had a feeling that his dad already knew and he was only giving him time to tell him.
