‘Squabble’ turns fatal

2011-11-04 00:00

A SQUABBLE between three young men led to the death of one, the wounding of another and the arrest of the father of a third in Regina Road, Northdale, yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours who witnessed the shooting were stunned and angry.

Sarshan Naidoo (20) was shot dead and his uncle, Allen Reddy (19), is in hospital after they were allegedly shot by a neighbour.

It is alleged that yesterday Naidoo and Reddy appeared in court charged with assaulting the arrested man’s son.

Neighbours said that when the pair returned home after their court appearance they tried to intimidate the neighbour’s son. The son reported them to his father.

Lovitha Nepaul, a neighbour, said that this is not the first time the man has pointed a gun at people who fight with his son.

“He shows off with his gun all the time because he knows that the police are his friends and won’t arrest him. He always swears at the children and intimidates and manipulates them,” said Nepaul.

Another neighbour said the man is friends with the police because he reports crimes to them.

Other people at the scene said they are waiting for the man to be released from jail so that they can “pay him back” for what he did.

“He didn’t even show any remorse. He was just standing and laughing at us,” said a bystander.

The mother of the deceased, Pam Reddy, screamed, “Why did you kill my son, why did you have to shoot them? Why? Tell me why? He killed my baby.”

The mother collapsed and bystanders brought her a chair while she wept at the sight of her son’s body that lay covered at the roadside.

The wife of the deceased, Shanice Naidoo (19), wept at the scene. She saw the man pull the trigger and shoot her husband dead.

“He shot my husband. He shot my husband. He shot him on the stomach. How is my baby going to live now?” she cried out. The couple have a one-year-old son.

From the police van the arrested man told Witness reporters that he has the “full story” and they should visit him in custody.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed that one shot was fired. It hit Reddy in the hand and then hit Naidoo in the chest, killing him.

She said the arrested man, who is 38, will appear in court today.
