St Anne’s, PMB Girls’ High off to finals

2015-03-24 00:00

DESPITE temperatures in the mid-30s on Saturday, the action on the hockey field ran at full throttle for the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament in the KZN capital.

When the goals had been scored and whistles blown for the final time, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High had bagged the PMB Central Region crown for the fifth time and St Anne’s had secured their fourth North Region title. These two champions will join eight fellow schools for the grand finals in July.

Fourteen teams played in the two regionals hosted by Howick High School at the UKZN PMB hockey grounds and Treverton at Epworth. Each team played six matches on a round-robin basis and the stats show that 138 goals were scored in 42 games.

Teams in the North Regionals were Grace College, St Anne’s, The Wykeham Collegiate, Carter High, Howick High, Voortrekker and Linpark; the Central Region group was Epworth, Alexandra, St John’s DSG, PMB Girls’ High, Maritzburg Christian School, Treverton and Russell High School.

St John’s gave PMB Girls’ High a good run for their money in the central draw, managing a 1-1 result when they met in their round-robin clash. It could have been a win for St John’s but an early goal from a penalty corner was disallowed. This was the only blemish on Girls’ High’s fixture list as they stuck to a tried and trusted game plan to finish with five wins from their six matches.

Later in the day, Epworth and Treverton beat St John’s, allowing Girls’ High to be clear winners of the region.

St Anne’s defended their Northern Region title with aplomb under the guidance of former SA men’s coach Carlos Pereira. They overcame their greatest rivals The Wykeham Collegiate and never looked back, keeping a clean sheet for the entire tournament and scoring 29 goals in their six matches.

St Anne’s and PMB Girls’ High now join Hoërskool Ferrum (Northern KZN), Amanzimtoti (Durban South), Ashton College (Durban North) and Durban Girls’ College (Durban Central) plus four other teams from around the province for the finals in July at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG in Kloof.
