St Christopher: Rubbish uncollected at school

2012-01-20 00:00

ST Christopher School has complained that refuse has not been collected since the school broke up, leaving it with heaps of stinking rubbish when its pupils returned.

School chairperson Paul Roux told The Witness: “Since the school closed for the December vacation the garbage has not been collected. I have been calling the [waste] department to address the matter, but nothing has been done.”

Msunduzi spokesperson Brian Zuma apologised and said they were aware of the matter. “By tomorrow all the garbage will be gone.”

Meanwhile, Zuma said in recent weeks that the council has been having problems with clearing the garden refuse sites around the city, but has come up with a contingency plan.

“Work has begun in clearing garden refuse in various parts of the city and surrounding areas, but we ask the public to bear with us because we still have a problem with the ageing fleet so work will be moving at a slower pace,” he said.

He said by March they expect to have six compactors, which have already been ordered.

“The municipality has come up with a new campaign of waste collection in the city. In a couple of months the city of Pietermaritzburg will be cleaner than it’s been in a long time.”
