St Faiths: Community shares its gifts

2011-04-13 00:00

SIXTEEN members of the John’s Dale village in the St Faiths area near Umtentweni received livestock as part of a “Passing on the Gift” initiative from non-profit organisation Heifer International South Africa.

The movement aims to promote community development, food security, self-sustainability and environmental regeneration through agricultural intervention.

Before receiving the animals, the community members were provided with training in livestock management and basic business skills.

The project aims to achieve a “domino effect”, whereby a family passes on livestock to the next generation after successful production.

The 13 original members of the Ijabulo Noah project, which started in 2006, expanded their membership by identifying 16 new project beneficiaries on Sunday.

Ten families received 18 chickens each and six families two goats each.

The ceremony was attended by Heifer staff and partners from the Department of Agriculture.

One of the participants was Eunice Ngcobo, one of the original project members.

“Today, I came to help other families and change their lives,” she said.

Thoko Khumalo, who received two goats, said she was excited about her future.

“I hope to have income and extend my vegetable garden,” she said.

“I also want to help others in the future.” — Witness Reporter.
