St Lucia: lake gets good rain

2011-07-21 00:00

MORE than 150 mm of rain that fell over the Isimangaliso Wetlands have brought relief to the St Lucia estuary, which has receded severely during an eight year drought, said the Park Authority yesterday.

The Isimangaliso Wetlands Park Authority said in a statement that in the nine months from October last year to the end of June St Lucia had a total of 1 430,6 mm of rain.

It added that 156 mm of rain fell between Friday and Monday.

Although the St Lucia mouth had the most rainfall, the rain was well distributed throughout the lake system and there have also been good rains in the catchment areas.

The drought is reportedly one of the worst in recorded history with below average rainfall having occurred since 2002.

The statement said that for nearly a decade very little water has flowed into Lake St Lucia from the five rivers that normally feed the system.

Andrew Zaloumis, chief executive of the iSimangaliso authority, said they were implementing changes that would restore the functioning of the Lake St Lucia system.
