Stabbed and thrown away

A MAN who contacted police to report that his girlfriend may have been the victim of a crime, has been arrested for her murder.

The woman (21) was found in a sewer canal with multiple stab wounds and her throat slit by Mountain Rise and Loop Street police, and the Pietermaritzburg K-9 Unit on Friday night.

A police source who cannot be named said the police received a phone call from the woman’s boyfriend on Friday afternoon.

According to the source, the boyfriend (21) told police a neighbour had approached him and told him they had found his girlfriend’s clothes lying near a river behind Woodlands Secondary School.

Mountain Rise Warrant Officer Ravie Pather said they arrived on scene with the dog unit and began the search for the woman.

Another source, who could not be named, said police at the scene noticed a huge amount of blood in the servitude running to the sewer canal.

“They searched the area with the dogs and the dogs gave a positive indication the body was in the servitude,” said the source.

According to the source, the police rescue team waded into the muck. They located and pulled out the body from the filth so that they could examine it.

“I lost count of how many times she had been stabbed when I reached 20,” said the source.

Pather said the woman’s throat had been slit and she had been stabbed and raped and then her body thrown into the sewer.

“In total, four people have been arrested for the murder,” said Pather.

Pather confirmed that two of the people arrested were under the age of 18 and the woman’s boyfriend and another man (19) were arrested.

Police had become suspicious of the boyfriend when certain aspects of his story did not add up, said a police source.

“He had a fight with her the other day. He was very jealous about his girlfriend and he gave a statement to the police that he planned her murder.”

According to the police source, the couple had an explosive fight a few days ago and the woman had left her boyfriend and moved into her father’s house.

The police source said the scene was very upsetting because of the manner in which the woman’s body had been discarded.

“She had just been discarded, like she was garbage,” said the source.

The four men linked to the murder are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.
