Stabbing: State needs time to probe protection order

2013-06-06 00:00

CLAUDIUS Chetty (18) of Copesville made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with the murder of teenager Rashmika Janthielayal on Monday.

Janthielayal (17), from Greytown, was stabbed several times on the stairway at the uMgungundlovu FET Northdale campus where she was enrolled to study hairdressing.

She died at the scene of stab wounds to her face, neck and body.

The state yesterday said it is opposed to Chetty’s release on bail.

Prosecutor M. Aboobaker asked magistrate Ashin Singh to postpone the case for seven days to June 12 pending further investigations.

She said one of the aspects the state wants to investigate further was an allegation that Janthielayal had applied for a protection order against the accused.

The application was granted.

Chetty, dressed in a pink shirt and grey jacket and sporting a thin beard trimmed to line his face, was yesterday remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.

He was represented by Reshen Pillay of Anand Pillay & Associates.
