Stabbings: Pupil dead, guard hurt

2010-04-15 00:00

A SECURITY guard at a local high school is in hospital after being stabbed while trying to break up a fight between two schoolboys and, in a separate incident, a Durban pupil has died at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital after he was stabbed in class. Both incidents happened yesterday.

The principal at Newton High School said the security guard was stabbed by one of the pupils fighting outside the school premises.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Phindile Radebe said the offender ran away from the scene, and has not been arrested yet — although the police know where he lives.

The principal could not confirm the ages of the boys involved in the incident, but said the school is conducting an investigation to compile a report for submission to the Education Department.

ER24’s Derrick Banks said the man was seriously injured as he was stabbed in an artery just below the shoulder. He underwent surgery last night.

The details on the other stabbing incident, at Mbelebele High School in uMlazi, were just as sketchy.

Radebe said a 17-year-old pupil stabbed a 20-year-old pupil at the school at around 10 am.

The Education Department’s Mbali Thusi said the 20-year-old died in hospital and the younger pupil is in police custody.

Thusi said further information on both incidents will be available this morning, once reports have been concluded.
