Standard beat District by 219 runs and Zingari outplay Northern Natal in nine-wicket win

2011-10-13 00:00

THERE were contrasting degrees of competitiveness in the first round of KZN Inland Premier League action last Sunday.

In the two mismatches Inland champions Standard overwhelmed Northern Districts by a massive 219 runs, while Zingari outplayed Northern Natal in their nine-wicket win.

The popgun effectiveness of the northern bowling attacks is amply illustrated in the combined 510 runs scored for the loss of just seven wickets.

And while Northern Natal were able to post a decent 213 with Imraan Hoosen (53), Sheldon Mungroo (57) and Remel Domun (40) getting substantial starts, the Districts lads disintegrated in the face of quality first-class spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (five wickets for two runs) and the competitive club man Brent Kay (3-18).

Yes, Inland top-order batters Devon Conway (168), Chad Barron (57) of Standard and their provincial team-mate, Zingari’s Nic Hendrie (101 not out) did get in some welcome time out in the middle. One can only surmise at the effectiveness of their innings when one considers that double Provincial Challenge winners Western Province will be visiting the Maritzburg Oval this weekend.

Putting aside the quality of the Northern Natal team for a moment, Zingari all-rounder Jarryd Phillips (107* and 3-35) put his hand up for consideration by Inland head coach Anton Roux.

Unfortunately the Kearsney product’s Inland debut a while back brought very little return, but indications are that he has taken to heart Roux’s promise to reward club performers with at least a trial amongst his provincial squad.

Thankfully the remaining two matches brought competitive cricket in which Midlands and Varsity were pushed all the way by the Woodlands-based Lancashire lads and Young Natalians respectively.

Certainly this Sunday’s Varsity and Standard clash and the match-up between Zingari and Lancs look set to produce more of the same.

In the KZN Women’s League down in Durban the Maritzburg Cricket Association XI earned a meritorious 65-run win over Durban Collegians largely on the back of Cherri Cannon’s five for 13.
