Standard to take on newbies K&L

2008-03-13 00:00

The 13th round of the KZN Inland Premier 50 club cricket competition takes place on Sunday.

At Collegians Club, Zingari host the Woodlands-based Lancashire first XI.

The Midlands country districts cricketers are at home to Young Natalians at Eston Country Club. The Standard Cricket Club first XI travel north to meet the Ladysmith-based K&L, while Sunfoil Orientals meet Varsity at the Maritzburg Oval.

Long-suffering Sunfoil Orientals have much work to do if they hope to erase the nightmare of their nine-wicket loss to Zingari last weekend, while a rejuvenated Varsity will be looking to consolidate after their six-wicket win over Lancs. Long-time champions Varsity, a side that has had its ups and downs this season after dominating the league for a number of years, will show Orientals little sympathy.

A buoyant Standard — undoubtedly the strongest team in the KZN Inland cricket province this season — will be hoping to extend their dominance following last Sunday’s 202-run thrashing of Young Natalians. The K&L team, the new kids on the block, can expect the same unrelenting pressure from Standard that they felt in their 137-run defeat by Midlands.

Lancs, a proud club with tremendous support from chairman Michael Patricks and his deputy Lee Brissett — plus arguably the biggest fan base in the capital city — will still be smarting from the loss to Varsity and legendary chairman Harry Brown’s Zingari line-up can expect a tougher opponent this time out.

The cricket-crazy Midlands farmers should have little trouble in beating a Young Natalians side that has performed way below its undoubted potential this season.
