Stander, Neethling win Sardine Super Classic

2009-06-20 00:00

THE mountain biking fraternity descended upon Port Edward last weekend to take part in the Sardine Super Classic, which forms part of the KZN Super Classic Series. The venue was situated at the old Pont, which proved to be the perfect venue as spectators could swim in the river or just relax in the sun while the riders raced.

The racing was fast and the good mix of fast open sections and the technical single track made for very interesting racing as competitors jostled for position before settling in to the task at hand. Burry Stander (Specialized Mr Price) was back on home soil and was in a class of his own with his international experience showing in his dominance of the event, winning in a time of 1hr 47:57. Most impressive was the performance of Maritzburg College boy, Brendon Davids (Jeep), who placed second overall place in a time of 1hr54:33. Luke Roberts (Maverick) took third place overall in a time of 1hr57:39.

Girls High talent Candice Neethling (Jeep) won the women’s race convincingly, having recently returned from racing in the UK. Second place went to young rising star Hayley Smith (Bell Equipment) with Melanie Palframan placing third. The event attracted a fantastic turnout of over 700 entries across the three races.
