Stander family relieved homicide trial is back on

CHERISE Stander won’t be there when the taxi driver accused of causing her husband’s death appears in court again.

“It’s too traumatic and I don’t think I want to know everything that happened that day,” she said yesterday, reacting to the news that the man accused of knocking down cyclist Burry Stander would face trial.

The chief prosecutor for southern KwaZulu-Natal, Ray Sansom, told Stander’s family by e-mail last week that the culpable homicide case against Njabulo Nyawose (24) had been reinstated. He will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on August 21.

After being told by the media that the case had been provisionally withdrawn on July 2, the Stander family expressed their shock and disappointment.

Stander’s mother, Mandie, said she would fight tooth and nail until justice was served.

“I am relieved that the case is now going to court. I can’t say I’m happy because nothing surrounding Burry’s death is anything to be happy about,” she said.
