Star power for this week’s film releases

2014-09-12 00:00

HOLLYWOOD stars Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo team up with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine for Begin Again.

College sweethearts Greta (Knightley) and Dave (Levine) are songwriting partners who move to New York after he lands a deal with a major label. When he strays, heartbroken Greta considers moving back home to Britain.

Before she leaves, however, she’s spotted on stage by a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) who recognises her musical talent and opens up an entire world of possibility for both of them.

Also new to local cinemas is the science fiction drama The Giver, starring Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Alexander Skarsgard. In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is selected to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.

There’s more star power on show from Oscar winners, Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, in the thriller, Before I Go To Sleep. The film tells the story of a woman who wakes up every day remembering nothing as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. One day, new terrifying truths emerge that force her to question everyone around her.

At Cinema Nouveau Gateway is the comedy drama Mr Morgan’s Last Love, which stars Michael Caine as a crusty Paris widower and Clemence Poesy as the sprightly dance instructor who brightens up his days.

Matthew Morgan (Caine) is a former philosophy professor who

moved to the City of Lights with his late wife (Jane Alexander) to live out their golden years together.

Three years on from her death, he still catches glimpses of her in all the old familiar places, though he himself is the one who’s taken to walking around like a ghost of his former self.

Then he bumps into Pauline (Poesy). Her hair reminds him of his late wife’s, he says; his beard reminds her of her late father’s. Soon enough, he’s dancing the cha-cha-cha in her class and literally letting some light into his musty apartment.

There are also two new Bollywood films on circuit: Finding Fanny and Creature – 3D.

Finding Fanny stars Arjun Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, and tells the story of old postman Ferdie (Naseeruddin Shah), who receives a letter written 46 years ago to the love of his life, Stefanie ‘Fanny’ Fernandes (Anjali Patil), asking for her hand in marriage. He realises it was never delivered.

Creature — 3D is India’s first 3D monster thriller film and is intended to scare the audience with a massive creature, which has been crafted using visual effects.
