Staying behind: airport fish tank won't be moved

2010-05-01 00:00

FOR almost a decade, the gigantic fish tank at Durban International Airport has kept restless children entertained and tourists amused.

Durban International was the only airport in South Africa to have a fish tank. Sadly, the fish and the many species of coral it housed will not be moved but rather donated to a marine enthusiast.

While everyone sets up home at King Shaka International Airport, the fish tank will remain behind at the once buzzing airport.

It was such an important attraction at the old airport that when it cracked three years ago, the Airports Company of SA immediately repaired it.

Acsa brand and communications manager Colin Naidoo told Weekend Witness that the tank was built in 2001 after Acsa decided that it would add ambience to the airport.

“We thought that it would have a nice effect. It soon became a meeting point for many people,” he said.

Naidoo said that while it was sad that the tank will not feature at King Shaka International Airport, there are plenty of attractions to keep people entertained.
