Steenkamp’s parents and family ’taking each day at a time’

2013-02-16 00:00

PORT ELIZABETH — In the first 24 hours while they were in shock and disbelief at Reeva Steenkamp’s murder, her parents and family didn’t watch TV or listen to the radio.

Her uncle, Michael, spoke to the media outside her parents’ home in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

“I don’t know how the family is going to get over this. We’re taking each day at a time. But today we’re all feeling a bit stronger.”

Her father, Barry, was seen talking to a friend on the verandah, but didn’t want to speak to the media.

“We can confirm that we will bring Reeva’s remains to Port

Elizabeth. A private funeral will be held in Walmer on Tuesday,” said Michael.

He thanked the local and foreign media for their empathetic reporting. He said the family had received messages of condolence from all over the world and “all levels of society”.

“We look at all the problems and think South Africa has hit a speed wobble, but if we look at all the sympathy we have received over the past two days, we see there’s more to people than we think,” he said.

Asked if Pistorius and Steenkamp were happy, as far as he knew, he said: “My daughter recently visited them and they were happy then.”
