Steps to a South African utopia

2012-08-16 00:00

ACCORDING to the National Development Plan (NDP), the six most important things South Africans should do are:

- Uniting around a common programme to achieve prosperity and equity;

- Promoting active citizenry to strengthen development, democracy and accountability;

- Bringing about faster economic growth, higher investment and greater labour absorption;

- Focusing on key capabilities of people and the state;

- Building a capable and developmental state;

- Encouraging strong leadership throughout society to work together to solve problems.

How will the National Planning Commission make its plan work?

- All South Africans must take responsibility for the plan, led by the president and his ministers;

- The commission will mobilise society to support the plan andsee how society can work together to invest and create jobs to reduce poverty and inequality;

- It will conduct research on critical issues affecting long-term development;

- It will advise the government and social partners on implementing the plan;

- It will work with relevant state agencies to report on how the objectives of the plan progress;

- To build a better SA, we must start today.

How to reach Utopia by 2030 in three easy steps (according to the NPC):

1. Increase employment through faster economic growth, for which business, labour, communities and government will have to work together;

2. Improve the quality of education, skills, development and innovation;

3. Build the capacity of the state to play a developmental, transformative role.

To reach Utopia we need:

- Social cohesion;

- Active support of all citizens;

- Leadership in all sectors that puts SA’s collective interests; ahead of narrow, short-term goals;

- Radically improved government performance;

- To get the basics right;

- To implement government programmes;

- To hold people accountable for their actions;

- To find innovative solutions to complex challenges.
