Sticker is the kicker: Passenger’s wheelchair fails to impress traffic cop

PRETORIA — A disabled holidaymaker is upset about the R300 fine he was levied in Margate for parking in a bay for the disabled.

Etienne Buys said the incident happened during a family holiday last week.

He was in his brother’s car when they pulled up in front of the local Wimpy where there were two vacant bays for use by the disabled. A traffic officer was standing in one, blocking their entry, and talking on his cellphone.

Buys said his brother hooted to get the man’s attention and to ask him to step aside so they could park.

The officer said they could not park there because the car did not display a disabled sticker. Buys said he explained the situation, but the officer persisted in writing a ticket, even after Buys had got out of the car and got into his wheelchair.

A restaurant staffer met them and gave them a temporary sticker to use, but this did not deter the officer, Buys said. He took photos of the the officer, he added.

The local traffic department had not responded to a request for comment by the time of going to press.
