Stokvel clubs warned not to pay cash

2013-11-27 00:00

STOKVEL clubs are advised by police to transfer their funds electronically to avoid the money being stolen.

The end of the year means many stokvel clubs will be distributing contributions to their members. Normally the contributions are large sums of money that are distributed as cash pay-outs.

Colonel Jay Naicker of the SAPS said: “We are urging these clubs to transfer these funds electronically to their members’ accounts to avoid them from being robbed of their cash. Last year we had many stokvel clubs that reported being robbed after they had withdrawn cash for distribution.”

According to Naicker, many of the stokvel robberies occurred at people’s homes, after they received their contributions. “It is evident that people are robbed by individuals that are close to them and who are aware that they will be receiving such a pay-out. During this past weekend we have already had two people that claimed that they were robbed of their stokvel money at their homes,” said Naicker.

To avoid being robbed, the SAPS advise all people to make use of electronic banking facilities when making payments and receiving money.
