Storm-damaged track is cleared

A FIERCE storm this week brought 32 trees crashing down on the course of next weekend’s UCI MTB World Cup downhill championship and this weekend’s national championships.

Frantic efforts by the organisers to clean up the mess have succeeded and the races are “ready to go”.

The hail hammered Town Hill on Wednesday night and left uprooted trees across the track. The rain converted the 420 metre track into a mudbath.

Course designer Nigel Hicks said yesterday he and his six team-mates have already removed the trees in the way.

“There was hail lying 10 cm thick the day after the storm.

“It took a full day with a chainsaw to get rid of the trees. Now riders will get time to practise on the course,” Hicks said.

The course is three kilometres long with a drop of about 416 metres.

Hicks said “There is a mud puddle of note near the top of the course near the big rock, which is at least 20 cm deep and it’s like an ice rink on the hill. From there on in you just hang on for dear life,” he said.
