Straight from deli to plate in new eatery

2012-11-13 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG-BASED high-quality meat processing business Oscar’s Authentic Deli Meats recently established a new restaurant at the well-known site of the old Butchery restaurant on Roberts Road. The new investment also includes a retail deli outlet.

Roger Troisi, marketing manager at Oscar’s Deli Meats, said the 70-seat establishment, which employs 18 people, has a distinct advantage when it comes to food quality and costs, given that it is linked to the main Authentic Deli Meats business.

He said this new business — Oscar’s Bistro, Deli and Pub — possesses significant buying power, thereby reducing their cost-base.

Oscar’s Authentic Deli Meats is in Havelock Road and employs about 165 people.

Troisi said they will focus on regular customers, as well as private and corporate functions.

Oscar’s was first established in Zimbabwe in 1968.

“The business landed up here in PMB when the family was passing through PMB to go to Cape Town. They then found a small butchery that they liked, ended up buying and then staying here.”

Regarding the plans for the new restaurant, Troisi said: “The ambitions of the business going forward will be to further promote the quality products produced by Oscar’s in the dishes placed on the menu in the bistro.”

Some of their main dishes include their ribs and chips, eisbein and chips, as well as their grilled kassler chops.

“We are slowly redefining the role of a family restaurant not attached to a franchise. We are able to accommodate individual needs and desires and we have the flexibility to change more quickly to suit economic trends.”
