Strange lights: ‘ball of flame’ seen over city

2011-03-24 00:00

FOLLOWING yesterday’s story about strange lights in the sky, sightings ahve been reported of a bright UFO over the city on Tuesday evening.

Richmond resident Phyllis Gray said she and her husband Bob were returning home after visiting friends when they both saw a light low in the sky towards Eston.

“At first I thought it was a very bright shooting star, but it was too low. We watched it for a couple of seconds before it disappeared.” She said it was travelling far too fast to have been an aeroplane.

Local resident Terry Hatting, said he also saw something in the sky on Tuesday evening.

“I was seated at Quincy’s Pub & Restaurant on the patio/smoking section facing Victoria Road. I happened to look up from the table and just catch a view of what looked like a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere before it disappeared behind the Virgin Active gym.

“It looked like a ball of flame with a tail of fire shooting through the sky in the direction of Durban.

“At first I thought it might have been an aeroplane on fire, but it was moving too fast, so my next thought was a meteorite. I searched the Internet this morning but haven’t been able to find any reports on what I saw.”

Meanwhile, Hayfields resident Suben Pillay has described his excitement at at seeing Venus in the early morning skies when he cycles at 4 am.

“At the beginning of February, I saw the most beautiful sight in the sky. Next to the Moon on the eastern side of the sky I saw an object which was round, slightly smaller than the moon and had a bright orange colour.”

Pillay did some research and confirmed his hunch that it was Venus he had seen.

Writing from Germany, Francine Garratt wondered whether the strange lights in the sky could be Chinese lanterns that are lit and raised aloft by the hot air..
