Strike: Staff pelted with tomatoes

2009-04-06 00:00

THE strike at the Education Department’s service centre in Pietermaritzburg is starting to get messy as employees who have not participated in the illegal strike complained of being pelted with eggs and tomatoes.

Non-striking employees said things got heated when they were ambushed with eggs as they tried to enter and leave the Old Mutual Building in Langalibalele street last week. They said this morning the egg throwing continued, interspersed with tomato missiles.

“We are working behind [locked] gates like prisoners because we are being intimidated,” said one staff member.

Police have confirmed that two cases of common assault have been opened.
