Strikers win one-dayer against Inland on Duckworth-Lewis

2012-02-06 00:00

GAUTENG’S Highveld Strikers needed 76 runs with nine wickets in hand and 21.5 overs remaining against KZN Inland when bad light brought the Provincial Challenge 50-over match to an end at the Wanderers in Johannesburg yesterday.

The Duckworth-Lewis method was the decider, and Strikers won the match by 58 runs.

Inland were in trouble at 125 for seven, but Rudi Hillermann (60) and Brady Barends (42 not out) added 93 for the eighth wicket to take the Maritzburg lads to 218 for eight at the completion of their 50 overs.

In-form Strikers opener Keaton Jennings (71 not out) and King Edward VII School (KES) Grade 12 boy Shaylin Pillay (38 not out) were well on the way to victory when bad light came into play.

In the three-dayer that ended on Saturday, Inland set the Strikers a target of 273 for victory. When the umpires called time the Johannesburg lads were on 234 for three after 35 overs, finishing with a run rate of nearly seven to the over.

Richard Cameron made an unbeaten 112 (105 balls, 10 fours, four sixes) and shared in a 189-run stand for the third wicket with Grant Mokoena, who smashed 88 after facing 75 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes.

Needing just 40 runs, the Strikers ran out of time, but Inland had recovered well after their mediocre first innings.

The KZN Coastal versus Namibia fixtures in Windhoek were abandoned without a ball bowled.
