Student fakes robbery to dodge exam

A CAPE Town student’s tall tale yesterday landed him in serious trouble.

The 19-year-old Cape Peninsula University of Technology student was arrested and faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice after he made up a story about being robbed because he did not want to write an exam.

“The young man alleged that he was robbed at gun point of his cellphone, cash and bank cards by four unidentified males at the corner of Darling and Buitenkant Street in Cape Town,” said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.

The student said he was threatened by the robbers that they will kill him and his body will be dumped if he does not cooperate with them.

He then claimed to have “fought with one of the suspects and managed to run towards Cape Town Central Police Station where he wanted to open a case of armed robbery after he received trauma counselling,” said van Wyk. He added the student wanted the case number “which was going to be handed to his lecturer to be excused so that he will be given an exemption.”

Van Wyk warned the public not to misuse the criminal system for their own benefit.
