Student wins bursary after year-long struggle

2012-01-25 00:00

NOT willing to give up on her dream to study further, Thembeka Mlaba (18) from Cato Ridge pinned her last hope on the IT Certification Academy bursary competition that ran in The Witness from November 11, 2011 until January 10.

On Monday, she was announced as the winner of a R50 000 bursary and a notebook computer.

The former Linpark High School pupil said she finished matric in 2010 but could not study further because her mother could not afford it.

“I have applied for several bursaries but I have had no luck.

“So when I bought The Witness in December and saw the competition I thought I would give it one last shot.

“I did not think that I was going to win because it was such a long shot. I am still in shock and cannot believe it,” said Mlaba.

The study bursary offers the student an international qualification as a Microsoft-certified IT professional enterprise administrator or a Microsoft-certified professional developer.

Mlaba’s mother, Theodora, was very emotional after hearing that her daughter had won the bursary and thankful that her prayers had been answered.

“I am unemployed and it hurts knowing that you cannot provide for your only child. I watched her crying every day for the past year because she wants to study further but there is no money. Now I feel like all my prayers have been answered,” she said.
