Success for The Crickets in England

2013-06-12 00:00

THE Crickets, a star-studded social cricket club founded in 1947 and one of the few surviving traditional touring social teams in KwaZulu-Natal, have completed a successful tour of England in which their celebrity opponents have on the whole been well and truly beaten.

Along the lines of Gauteng’s widely known Nicky Oppenheimer XI, who have played tour openers against visiting Test-match countries such as the West Indies and India at their magnificent Randjesfontein cricket ground, The Crickets’ 12-day tour of England saw them playing against earls, counts and other landed gentry. They also played against cricket celebrities such as former Hampshire captain and world-renowned TV commentator Mark Nicholas.

The Crickets’ touring team had a strong Pietermaritzburg flavour and the captain was former Michaelhouse, PMB Varsity, SA Universities and Natal batsman Craig Sugden.

Some of the notable former provincial cricketers in the team were leg-spinner Richard McGlashan, Maritzburg College product and former Zingari and Natal batsman Keith Forde, as well as SA one-day cricket representative and former Westville, Natal cricket and rugby player, the wicketkeeper/batsman Errol Stewart.
