Sudden storm ends race

2008-04-10 00:00

RADIO sailors were the only yachts in action last weekend at Midmar. Six yachts turned out in MRYC’S R36 Shipmate class league race.

The event started in very pleasant conditions, but a sudden storm erupted bringing thunder, lightening and rain. It was decided to abandon the event after three races were completed.

At that point, Des Fairbank was declared the winner. Alex Gracie sailing his newly built Shipmate was in great form.

He finished second overall, which included a first to his great excitement, pipping Fairbank over the line. Robin Gracie came a creditable third and Graham Keir finished fourth. A new skipper, Malcolm Powell, has recently launched his new R36 and was seen learning the ropes.

The HMYC-scheduled event between the “oldies” and the “youth” brigades in Lasers was cancelled due to lack of support. This was probably because so many young sailors were away during school holidays.

This Sunday sees the final race in the George Duffin Trophy Series for Hunters and the HMYC monthly mug for any other class. A skippers’ briefing will take place at HMYC at 10.30 am and, as the season will soon be over, it is hoped the Hunter class will really support the event.
